61. CHOIR PEWS

ChoirPews

The choir pews are not particularly ornate, but have several interesting features. One is this plaque in memory of deceased choristers.    INDEX

62. CHOIR PEW INSCRIPTION

ChoirPews2

This shows half the inscription which reads: ‘AMDG In honoured memory of Walter Bedford Hills, our beloved Organist and Choirmaster for 36 years 1893 – 1929.

63. CHOIR PEW AND ORGAN

KeysOrganPipes

Also on the ends of the choir pews are wooden sculpted ‘keys of the kingdom’. The organ was installed in this Church in 1888 by Fincham and Hobday. It consisted of 19 draw stops including 3 couplers and was the first in South Australia to use tubular pneumatic action.

64. ORGAN CONSOLE

OrganConsole

Fortunately few changes occurred to the organ over the years. In 1981 it was decided that the organ should be restored with additions, and with the help of a generous bequest this was done. The organ now contains 1224 pipes.

65. WEST NAVE

NaveWView

As we prepare to investigate the South wall of the nave we look back down the Church. We notice the children’s area to the left, the baptismal font and paschal candle, and the great West window with a lancet on either side.

66. LECTERN

Lectern

The lectern stands on the front Southern side of the chancel platform. Unusually, the more commonly occurring brass eagle is replaced by a pleasing wooden angel. The lectern was given in memory of William Briggs Sells who died in 1902.

67. ALTAR RAIL KNEELERS

AltarRailKneelers

The kneelers across in front of the altar rail are of particular interest in that they outline the early history of South Australia.

68. SOUTHEAST NAVE

LampOrganPipesW

Above the lectern is a colourful lantern in memory of Augustus Stimson who died 1934. There is also a further stand of organ pipes, a small table, and several plaques.

69. AMNESTY TABLE

AmnestyDesk

On closer inspection we find that the table has an Amnesty theme. Amnesty International is an organization which promotes and defends human right in Australia and around the world. The candle with encircling barbed wire is their logo.

70. VARIOUS PLAQUES

Plaques

The three plaques at left concern the restoration of the organ, and mention Henry Ralph Green, Constance Grace Martin and Wyn Whitehill. The white tablet is in memory of Edward William Andrews 1811 – 1877. At bottom there is an explanation of lighting a candle, and a framed icon of Christians around the world with the Madonna and Child at centre.

71. CANDLE STAND

CandleHolder

This amazing votive candle stand was given by the Rev’d Tony Washington in memory of his wife Hanna who died in 1995.

72. NAVE SOUTH WALL EAST

NaveSWallE

This section of the South wall has three stained glass windows, a plaque, and a couple of hymn boards. The window at left has a dedicatory plaque below.

73. WINDOWS AND PLAQUES

NaveSWindowE12W

The first two windows ... at left the Good Shepherd window (given through the efforts of the children of this congregation to beautify the Church 1893), and at right a window depicting St Peter the Apostle (in memory of Rhoda Day and her son Charles). The central plaque is in memory of Robert Thomas, and Mary his wife. Robert Thomas was a prominent publisher of the time.

74. NAVE CEILING

NaveRoof

We pause here to look again at the nave ceiling, its old timbers supported by the graceful arches.

75. SOUTH WALL

NaveSWall

This different view of the South nave wall emphasizes its great length, and shows off some of the many colourful windows.

76. SOUTH NAVE WINDOWS

NaveSWindowsE35W

Here we have windows 3 – 5 of the South Nave wall, numbering from the East. From the left we have St Matthew the Evangelist (in memory of Paul Frederick Bonnin, died 1901), St Mark the Evangelist (William Knox Simms, 1897), and St Michael the Heavenly Angel (Frederick John West, 1895, and his wife Laura Mary, 1914).

77. SOUTHWEST CORNER

NaveSWWall

We near the end of our tour of St Peters as we come to this corner of the Church.

78. WINDOW AND PAINTING

NaveSWindowE6WPainting

Window Number 6 shows St Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne. This window was made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, London and is in memory of John Pearce who died 1919 and his wife who died in 1920. The painting is Lux Mundi – a copy of Holman Hunt’s ‘Light of the World’, showing Christ knocking on a door (Revelation 3:20).

79. CHILDREN’S CORNER

NaveSWCorner

This is obviously a good place for children to come to Church!

80. CORNER WINDOWS

NaveSWCornerWindows

The left window shows Hannah presenting her son Samuel to Eli the priest, and was given in memory of Sarah Young who died in 1918. The right window shows St Elizabeth and her son John the Baptist. This was given in memory of Esther Holmes Stanton who died in 1918.
