FAR TO GO TO MONARTO

Distance is relative of course, but Monarto is fairly close to Murray Bridge. We travel down the South Eastern Freeway past Mount Barker and Callington, turning left at the signed turn-off to Monarto. After a time there is a right-hand turn onto the old Princes Highway, and the entrance to Monarto Zoo is then soon on the left.

There is a sizeable entrance fee paid at the gate, and then a long drive takes us to a parking area and the Zoo headquarters. Here there are some interesting displays, a cafeteria, and toilets. The free buses leave from here too.

From the main building it is a short walk to view the resident meerkats.

A slightly longer, but easy, walk brings us to the yellow footed rock wallaby enclosure, and then to the orangutans.

There are several bus options from which it is possible to view the giraffes, cheetahs, rhinos, African hunting dogs, and many other wild animals which are able to roam ‘freely’ in their large enclosures.

On our return to the Centre, we enjoy a light lunch together in the cafeteria. We then board the bus, and return to Adelaide via the little hills town of Nairne. We found an interesting antiques shop, and took time for a photo in front of the historic Nairne Mill.

A pleasing outing.
