61. REGIMENTAL CHAPEL GA

RegimentalChapelGA

The Anglian Regimental Chapel is very colourful. The altar and reredos, the kneelers on the seats, and the regimental flags and colours all add to the brilliance of the scene. Then there are the windows.  Two of the windows on the North wall (left) are shown here. A further two are largely obscured by the organ. These last two are by Willement and contain shields removed from the former West window in 1859; they commemorate those who contributed to the 1844 restoration.  INDEX

62. CHAPEL WINDOWS GA GA

Shown here are one and a half windows in the North wall of the chapel! As well, the top half of the Eastern-most window is obscured by Regimental colours! The two lights on the left of this Eastern-most window are both signed at bottom right, by Sir John Ninian Comper (1864-1960), with a strawberry plant with fruit, leaf and flowers, and date in Roman numerals. They are in memory of his father who died in 1903 while sharing strawberries with some children.

63. CHAPEL EAST WINDOW GA

The East window is by Heaton, Butler and Bayne,1857. The top panels show scenes from the life of Moses, the lower panels scenes from the life of Christ.

64. CHAPEL ALTAR GA

ChapelAltarGA

The focus of the Regimental Chapel is the colourful altar and reredos. An open Bible sits in front of the altar, and the reredos carries an original depiction: The Risen Christ by Ninian Comper, 1935. Much of the decoration in this Chapel is by Sir Ninian Comper and includes the altar grouping, wood panelling, and the wrought iron gates.

CONCLUSION

I am really enjoying creating these websites of some of the great British Churches! I hope you are enjoying visiting them with me.

The main photographers for this site are ‘Glass Angel’ and Aidan McRae Thomson. There are also several photographs taken from a virtual tour of St Mary’s with photographer Carl Lamb, reproduced here under the licence conditions. Once again I express my appreciation to these photographers for allowing me to use their excellent photographs, and for their willingness to be involved in this project. The original photographs can be found at the following links:

The Virtual Tour is found on the page

I take little credit for the text which comes from a variety of different sources.

I also express my thanks to my wife Margie who dutifully reads through all my websites and checks the typing.
