61. HIGH ALTAR AND REREDOS PRS
The high altar and reredos are stunning, and worthy of closer examination. The five figures across the top are the welcoming Christ at centre with the four Church Fathers: from left St Jerome, St Gregory, St Augustine and St Ambrose. The four figures across the bottom are Hugh of Lincoln and the East Anglia apostle St Felix, with a pair of accompanying angels. INDEX
Here are two of the dramatic altar frontals in use at the Minster. The top frontal was designed in 1965 by Beryl Dean.
The sumptuous reredos dates from 1899, and was designed by G. F. Bodley. The three central panels from bottom to top show the Crucifixion, the Annunciation to Mary, and the welcoming risen Christ. Various other figues stand at the sides.
The glass in this window is by Ward & Hughes. It shows Christ at the centre with Mary Magdalene and St Margaret of Antioch on either side. The remaining figures are angels dressed in colourful fabrics. Although it appears to be a stained glass window, the figures are actually painted on the glass. It was presented by Samuel Gurney Cresswell in 1866. The old glass in this window was a Jesse tree, which lasted until the 18th century. Some details of the East window can be seen here.
It has been a great pleasure for me to revisit King’s Lynn Minster. My wife and I have fond memories of coming here in 2016.
As mentioned earlier, the photographs which appear here are almost all from three different photographers: ‘Glass Angel’ [GA], ‘Jules&Jenny’ [J&J], and J. J. Myers [JJM] (also appearing as ‘Le Monde1’). Once again I express my appreciation to them for allowing me to use their excellent photographs, and for their willingness to be involved in this project. There are also several of my own photographs [PRS], and a photograph from Simon Barnett (#35, SB) who unfortunately I have been unable to contact. Finally, several photographs have been taken from a Virtual Tour of the Minster [KLM].

I take little credit for the text which comes from a variety of different sources.
I also express my thanks to my wife Margie who dutifully reads through all my websites and checks the typing.
