The nautilus is often referred to as a ‘living fossil’. The creature which inhabits the shell has a prominent head and tentacles. The spiral section of the shell closely approximates an equiangular spiral. A good approximation to this can be drawn by successively removing a square from a golden rectangle, and inscribing a quarter circle (see diagram at right). The shell section demonstrates a pleasing fractal structure.
