F3. BRITISH COASTLINE

The coastline of Britain has the same fractal property as the border between Spain and Portugal. However, as it encloses a region we see similarities with the Snowflake Curve. This photo of the rocky Land’s End coast also helps us see the problems better. Thus, do we measure the coastline at high tide or low? In our measurement, do we include every protruding rock? every pebble? every grain of sand? Who would have thought that a simple question about finding length could lead to such insoluble problems!
