ADELAIDE ELECTRIC SUPPLY COMPANY

253 Grenfell St

Tandanya, on the corner of Grenfell Street and East Terrace, is a centre displaying Aboriginal works and culture. Around the corner, the building’s interesting past as the Adelaide Electric Supply Company is revealed.

The former power station on the corner of Grenfell Street and East Terrace eas built for the Electric Light and Traction Co. at a cost of £8650, and opened in 1901.

In 1904 the Adelaide Electric Supply Co. took over and was supplying all of Adelaide’s electricity three years later. Power was generated from this site until the early 1920’s when the Osborne Power Station was constructed.

The building fronting Grenfell Street was renovated as the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute which opened in 1989.
