HISTORIAN HOTEL

18 Coromandel Place

Just south of Bertram (Bible) House, down Coromandel Place, we find
the curiously named Historian Hotel with its magnificent sign.
But where did it ever get such a name?

The Historian Hotel is located at 18 Cormandel Place in the city, on the SE corner with French Street. It is a tidy two-storey building of aged red brick and rough stone with wrought iron flower boxes hanging around its deep-set windows. In various web descriptions it is described as a ‘lovely little quaint old pub in a back alley of the Adelaide CBD’. It still functions as a catering venue for meals and drinks.

It is worth wandering past to admire the heritage-listed old building with its very special sign!

From 30th June 1989, the establishment was known as Deacons’ Tavern and Restaurant. It became the Historian Hotel on 11th November 19991, under the ownership of Richard Bruce Coventry.

There appears to be no available earlier history of this interesting old building. I have drawn a blank online, and enquiries to the hotel staff were equally unfruitful.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has any stories or information.
