ST STEPHEN’S CHURCH

152 Wakefield St

St Stephen’s Church is tucked away behind greenery on the north side of Wakefield Street. It has a graceful tower, and carries a blue historic plaque. The interior is realatively simple, but with some attractive stained glass windows.

St Stephen's congregation was founded in 1862, but its roots go back as far as 1846 when a group of immigrants arrived in Adelaide from Hannover. They settled in Klemzig, site of the first Lutheran village in South Australia. They formed themselves into the St Stephen's congregation, bought land, and built a church at 125 Pirie Street.

It was dedicated on the 9th of March 1862. The new congregation chose as its motto, the words from Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever".

As the membership grew, the small church became inadequate and so a new one was built at 152 Wakefield Street. It was dedicated on the 11th of February 1900. The adjoining hall was added in 1905. The church, which is listed as a City of Adelaide Heritage item, is a pleasing example of church architecture of the Gothic Revival style. Its relatively simple interior is enhanced by some attractive stained glass. The altar window features the ‘Good Shepherd’ and that in the eastern transept depicts ‘the martyrdom of St Stephen’.  The Martin Luther memorial window on the southern wall is the most recent addition, dedicated in 1994.
