The striking Stag Hotel has had an unbroken existence since its founding in 1849. Custom came first from the adjacent East End Markets, and later from activities in Rundle Street and the Parklands opposite. |
The Stag Hotel sits on the SW corner of Rundle Street and East Terrace. It is one of Adelaides important corner landmarks, as it has had an unbroken existence since is was first licensed by George Taylor in 1849. The hotel was owned by Taylor and his executors for over 50 years, before being sold to Thomas Richardson in 1902. The new owner engaged architects Garlick and Jackman to plan the rebuilding of the two-storey section in 1903. Originally known as the Stag Inn, it was given its present name in 1903. It held an important gateway postion to the city with stables, stockyards and a weigh station which provided facilities for buyers and sellers alike. When the markets were established next door the hotel became the place where local market traders replenished their thirst. More recently the hotel has gained international exposure through its prominent position on the Grand Prix and Clipsal 500 race circuits. |
