METROPOLITAN HOTEL

42 Currie St

The Metropolitan Hotel is a graceful old lady on the north side of Grote Street. Its blue plaque tells us that the hotel was constructed in 1883 for a certain L. Penaluna, whose name is still remembered in nearby Penaluna Place.

It is difficult to find much historical input on the Metropolitan Hotel. On Tuesday 12th March 1861, the Adelaide Advertiser records that the Bench of Magistrates received an application andgranted a Publican’s General Licence to John Penaluna, Metropolitan Hotel, Grote Street, Adelaide. A similar application is recorded on March 9th 1869. It is likely that John Penaluna migrated here from Cornwall.
