SIR SAMUEL WAY BUILDING

The original Moore’s Department Store which was destroyed by fire, has now been completely renovated to house the criminal courts. From the fifth floor one can view the original magnificent staircase below the impressive dome.

The Sir Samuel Way Building was built in 1912 and served as a Department Store for Charles Moore and Co. Ltd. The Building was modelled on the Galleries Lafayette in Paris.

On 2nd March 1948 a great fired destroyed the building & only the magnificent marble staircase and perimeter walls survived.

The Store was rebuilt re-opened and continued trading until 1980 when it finally closed.

The Store site was re-developed into the State Law Courts Complex as we know it today, the original walls and Grand Marble Staircase were retained and an atrium added. Named the Sir Samuel Way Building after Sir Samuel Way the longest serving Chief Justice (1876-1916). and was opened officially on 27 June 1983.
On Levels one, three and five there are displays of historic photographs and information about Sir Samuel Way and the original Charles Moore building.
