7. 24 STOKES STREET
24 Stokes Street

Stokes

To a passer-by this appears to be a late Victorian weatherboard house. However, when rewiring was carried out some years ago, a shingle roof and oregon beams were exposed, providing evidence to suggest that the house had actually been one in the row of nine cottages built between 1853 and 1854 in Gellibrand Street. These cottages were built by Geoges Admans for the Colonial Government to house sea pilots, the health officer and his crew. It is believed that this Stokes Street cottage was moved by William Baillieu in 1887.
