1. SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL GARDENS
Flinders Parade

The Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens date from around 1917. The Norfolk Island pine trees were planted in memory of local men who lost their lives in World War I, 1914 – 1918.

The Gardens make a pleasant picnic area by the sea, but there are a number of features worth noting. An old Krupp FK 77 mm field gun commemorates all who served in the Australian Forces at home and abroad, according to the plaque.

A small cenotaph in the shape of a classical temple structure on a granite block base stands close by. It has recessed arched niches on east and west faces. Each face contains a plaque commemorating the First World War, Second World War and all conflicts.

In the centre of the Gardens stands a tall tapered marble Cross of Sacrifice with the words ‘Lest we forget : 1939 – 1945’. At the North end stands a smaller Long Tan Cross.

The South end of the Gardens is a more public area with children’s playground, an old steam locomotive with plaque, and public conveniences with a nicely illustrated wall with historical scenes (A, B, C, D).
