Egyptian Numerals

Back to Title Page

The Egyptian numerals (in stylized form!) are shown at left. The number system was base 10 (like our own) and was additive. This means that to write a number, for example, 324, they would write the symbol for 300, then the symbol for 20, and finally the symbol for 4.

Another example, using the hieroglypics can be seen at right. This is unlike the way we write our numbers - we use a a positional system - a ‘tens and units’ approach.
