Archimedes

Archimedes of Syracuse

287 212 BC

Archimedes is known as an engineer, natural philosopher and mathematician. He is included in the list of top ranking mathematicians. A man whose achievements were numerous and outstanding. His mechanical inventions were what brought him fame, but his real passion was pure mathematics.

Archimedes was the first to discover many concepts and new ways of thinking about problems.

In considering the number of grains of sand needed to fill the entire universe he showed that all numbers can be written down. He discovered ratios of volumes to various figures and in applying mathematical laws to levers, he pulled a fully loaded ship on to shore. His work showed immense strength and originality.
