11. CHARTRES REMEMBERS PYTHAGORAS

The present cathedral at Chartres dates from 1260, and is one of the most beautiful and best preserved in France. The arch above the right door contains statues representing figures from the past, including the mathematician Pythagoras. The figure appears to be sitting at a small lap-top desk, but perhaps it is a musical instrument. Pythagoras is famous for his contributions to geometry, number theory and the theory of music.
