The octagon is relatively uncommon in architecture, although not rare. However, probably no example is more stylish than the octagonal lantern of Ely cathedral. The cathedral is the third largest in England, and is a prominent landmark. When the original Norman tower collapsed in 1322, the cathedral was not given a spire, but a unique stone octagon, surrounded by an octagonal timber lantern. This octagon is the only one of its kind in England, and is a creation of great beauty and mathematical interest.
