31. THE MATHEMATICAL BRIDGE, CAMBRIDGE

The Mathematical Bridge is a wooden bridge across the River Cam, in Queens’ College, Cambridge. It is said that the bridge was designed and built by Sir Isaac Newton without the use of nuts or bolts. Later (so the story goes) students of the University took the bridge apart. Being unable to reassemble the structure, they had to resort to adding nuts and bolts. In reality, bolts or the equivalent were an inherent part of the design. In fact, Isaac Newton died in 1727, 22 years before the bridge was constructed!
