35. CLOCK WORKS

Every boy knows that if you pull a clock apart you find a whole lot of cogs and gear wheels. The wheels come in different sizes and have different numbers of teeth which mesh together. This allows for diffent rates of rotation. Thus, for example, one rotation of a big cog with 80 teeth engaging with a smaller 50 tooth cog will make the smaller cog undergo 8/5 of a revolution. This is a practical way of studying fractions, greatest common divisors, and lowest common multiples.
