58. WEATHER VANE AND DIRECTION

Weather vanes these days come in all shapes and sizes. They indicate the direction from which the wind is blowing, relative to four key directions, N, E, S, and W. In general, direction is measured using the unit, the degree, with 360 degrees (360°) denoting a complete revolution. North is usually denoted 0°, and angle is measured clockwise from this point. But where did the number 360 come from? Some people blame the Babylonians, but it is more likely an early estimate of the number of days in a year, corresponding to the rotation of the earth around the sun.
