69. MÖBIUS STRIP

August Ferdinand Möbius [pronounced Mer'-bee-us] (1790 – 1868) was a German mathematician best known for his discovery of the Möbius strip. The strip is pictured in this fine sculpture attributed to Fabiola Manjarraz-Gutiérrez of the University of California. The Möbius strip is a simple loop of paper (say) with a single twist. It is very easy to make such a strip, and the strip has a number of very interesting properties. For example it has just one face, and just one edge. Further interesting and surprising things happen when the strip is cut along its length along its centre line, or along a line a third of the way across. Try it!
