72. BERNOULLI’S TOMBSTONE

Jakob Bernoulli (1654 – 1705) was a member of a family that made many contributions to mathematics. The Bernoulli name is known todayin a mathematical context due to Jakob’s work in statistics and probabilty, differential equations, number theory and the lemniscate. He was fascinated by the way the equiangular spiral reproduces itself under a variety of transformations, and asked that such a spiral be engraved on his tombstone, along with the inscription Eadem mutata resurgo, which translates to ‘I shall arise the same, though changed’.
