85. FRIEZE

A frieze or a strip pattern or a wallpaper border is a decorative strip commonly seen below the ceiling cornice of a room. A frieze may have an abstract pattern as shown here, or some picture or scene. The common feature is that the pattern repeats itself along the length of the frieze. A scenic frieze usually features a simple translation of the picture along its length, as shown above. Other firiezes, like this dotted frieze pattern is more interesting mathematically because it maps onto itself under three different reflections: a horizontal reflection with mirror line through the centres of the middle row of dots, a vertical reflection with mirror line through the centres of a pair of dots, and a vertical reflection with mirror line through the centre of a single dot. This is the most complex of the seven types of frieze.
