On a weather map, look at the wind direction around a Low (L).

Is it in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction? Would it be the same in the northern hemisphere?

Is the direction the same around a High (H)?

One might expect the winds to move directly from a High pressure area (H) to a Low pressure area (L). Use your library or the Internet to find out why this does not happen.

Winds

The wind moves around a Low in a clockwise direction.

The wind moves around a High in an anti-clockwise direction.

This behaviour is the same in northern and southern hemispheres.

This behaviour is easy to remember:

CYCLONE –
CLOCKWISE

ANTI-CYCLONE – ANTICLOCKWISE
