DAY 5 : THURSDAY : KINGSTON, BUMBORA, CYCLORAMA

I wake up about midnight to the sounds of a tropical downpour – something Adelaide would die for – or without. This morning is cloudy and humid, but may turn out fine. We have the usual large buffet breakfast, and then go for a little walk around the property. Some unusual hibiscuses ...

... and two enormous water tanks belonging to the resort – the manager tells us they hold a million gallons each, and have never run dry.

This morning we drive back down to Bloody Bridge for a better photo. We then explore the old convict cemetery at Kingston.

There are some interesting inscriptions dating back to 1843, and some rather sad stories.

This Fletcher Christian was a great grandson of the Fletcher Christian who was a master's mate on board the Bounty during William Bligh's fateful voyage to Tahiti for breadfruit plants. It was the earlier Christian who seized command of the Bounty from Bligh in 1789 – the mutiny on the Bounty.

We then drive around to Bumbora Reserve in the South-West of the island. All the roads are scenic here, and everyone gives a friendly wave. Bumbora has a sandy beach with large black rounded volcanic rocks, and the inevitable surrounding cliffs, and pines. I find some sea snails, but no evidence of crabs.

We drive back to Burnt Pine for a light lunch, and Marg buys a new luggage case. We have a brief break at the villa before visiting the Cyclorama across the road. This is an excellent 'in the round' painted depiction of the Mutiny on the Bounty story. The painting is beautifully done, and there is a sound track to accompany the story as you view the scenes from the centre of the complex.

[This illegal photo may be excused if I say what an excellent place this is to visit!]

I think we have now seen every recorded 'sight' on the island - at least the ones we want to see and are able to access. We have also explored nearly every road; of course, only the scenic ones are listed in this account. Tea at home followed by the news on SBS. There is some heavy rain in the evening.
