WAIAPU CATHEDRAL, NAPIER

![The foundation stone commemorates the beginning of the first St John’s Cathedral, and survived the earthquake. It was laid by the second Bishop of Waiapu, Edward Craig Stuart. ![As the plaque relates, fragments of of glass from the destroyed original Cathedral were carefully assembled into this window. I am reminded (in a small way!) of the reconstruction from fragments of the West window of Winchester Cathedral in England, after the original was destroyed by Cromwell. ![The foyer window shows the Nativity. It was one of a pair being installed in the old Cathedral in 1931. Still in its packing, it survived. Its partner, depicting the Adoration was destroyed, along with the old Cathedral. The banner carries symbols of the constituent parish churches. So here in order: St John the Baptist (words ‘Lamb of God’, St Mary Magdalene (ointment and tears), St Stephen (stones, and palm of victory), St Barnabas (roses worn on his feast day), St Matthew (Divine man), and St Mark (winged lion). ![This cross and another beneath the organ console are made of stone from the Liverpool Cathedral. They were presented at the time of the dedication and consecration respectively. ![This Coventry Cross is made from 14th Century nails of the old Coventry Cathedral destroyed in World War II. They depict the childhood and baptism of Jesus: the blessing of Simeon; adoration of the Magi; Jesus teaching in the Temple; the baptism of Jesus. ![The lectern supports the Bible, and it is from here that the Word of God is read Sunday by Sunday. This lectern is the only surviving furnishing from the original cathedral, and was given in memory of the first Dean. [14]](Resources/exibid_D04Lectern.jpg "54. LECTERN")
![Like the pulpit, the altar is in traditional English style, though the work of New Zealand craftsmen. The altar was designed by W. Andrews of Tauranga, and following his death, completed by C. E. ![Cathedrals take their name from the ‘cathedra’ – the chair of the Bishop. The chair in this Cathedral is made of oak and was carved for the wooden church built after the earthquake. ![This Chapel is a memorial to the Rt Rev Frederick Bennett, first Bishop of Aotearoa, and Sir Apirana Ngata. ![The Cross above the altar was designed and made of wood and glass by Brian Grouden of Havelock North, in 1975. The red centre suggests the eternal presence of God (suggestive of a sanctuary light). Viewed from the front, the Cross appears empty; from the side, the outline of the crucified Christ is suggested. [17] This completes our tour of the Cathedral.
