Janet was born at Carlisle [?] in Scotland, and was seven when she arrived with her family in Port Adelaide as assisted immigrants. She remembered enjoying listening to the sailors singing their songs at sea, eating large juicy oranges at Capetown, and Adeaide as a town of tents. After some initial hardships the family acquired a property on section 3283 at Golden Grove. Janet later recalled how she would read books to her father as he plied his trade of boot-making. After marrying James in 1852, the couple had eight children, not counting five boys who died as infants or small children from diphtheria. Edith CROSBY (nee MILNE) tells of twoof the little fellows, both with diphtheria playing on a mat in front of the fire; they both strated coughing and choked to death.
