22. NAVE SOUTH WALL

SNaveWall

We now return to the back of the nave, and look across to the South wall. Our attention is drawn to the font which occupies the South entry porch. Next is the one stained glass window of the nave, and beyond that, three more memorial tablets.

23. FONT

Font  FontPlaque

The font is attractive with its marble base and carved wooden cover. It was a gift from Lady Augusta Young, wife of Sir Henry Edward Fox Young who was the fifth Governor of South Australia, serving from 1848 to 1853. A plaque on the wooden cover reads: ‘To the glory of God. In memory of Frederick Joseph Hayman Died 20th Dec 1931 Aged 21 years.’

24. CHILDREN’S WINDOW

SNaveWindow  SWindowDetail  SNaveWindowDetail2

The sole stained glass window in the nave depicts two events. At top is a picture of the Nativity with the shepherds coming to worship. The larger lower panel shows an adult Jesus walking with children of several races. The text below this panel reads: ‘The Children's Centennial Memorial Window 1837 – 1937. If we look very closely, we see that the window was made by Mathieson & Gibson of Melbourne.

25. TIHREE MEMORIALS

ASWallMemorial1  BSWallMemorials

The three memorials on this wall ... . At left, John Stokes Bagshaw, who was the first Grand Master of the Orange Institution of South Australia, who died January 1st, 1888 aged 80 years. At right top: The Hon Samuel Tomkinson who was a member of the Legislative Council and a Trustee of Holy Trinity Church who died on 30th August 1900. At right below: Julia Hutchinson, widow of Captain Samuel Gawler who was killed in 1804) and mother to Colonel Gawler, the second Governor and Resident Commissioner of the Province of South Australia. Also mentioned is Edward Cox, sixth son of Colonel Gawler and his wife Maria who died in 1841.

26. NAVE ROOF

NaveRoof

I always enjoy noticing the roof interiors of old churches. Here the timber lined gable is supported by long curving wooden arches – spectacular and stylish!

27. SOUTH TRANSEPT

STransept

A balcony has been installed in the South transept, and is used for seating. Seven attractive crosses line the panel below the balcony rail. We catch a glimpse here too of some unexpected stained glass – on the South wall of the sanctuary.

28. NORTH TRANSEPT ORGAN PIPES

NTranseptOrgan

From the balcony in the South transept, we look straight across to the set of organ pipes in the upper North transept. This is the Grenfell Memorial Organ.  It is a fine instrument of twenty-three stops and 1,299 pipes in memory of Pascoe Grenfell, who gave the land on which the church is built. The instrument was dedicated on 2 February 1958, marking the 118th anniversary of the church.

29. SANCTUARY TILING

SanctuaryTiling

Although we have yet to explore the sanctuary, it would be remiss not to include here this fine view of the tiled sanctuary floor as seen from the South transept balcony. I sometimes wish we could return to the days when builders were happy to spend time and effort adding beautiful decorative touches to their buildings.

30. MEMORIAL AND CROSS

Memorial  DecoratibeCross

At right is one of the decorative crosses adorning the front of the South transept balcony. At left is the memorial tablet above the organ console. It reads: ‘In memory of Arthur Daniel Gell Aged 26 years, son of the Revd Philip Gell, and Elizabeth, his wife, of Derby, England. This tablet has been erected by a few friends who esteemed him while he lived, and mourn for him now dead. ... After ten years spent in the Public Service of this Province, he was proceeding to New Zealand in November 1848 to fulfil the appointment of Private Secretary to His Excellency Edward John Eyre Esquire when ... he was lost on this passage ... .’

31. ORGAN CONSOLE

Organ

The organ console stands in the South East corner of the crossing. It carries a brass plaque which reads: ‘In memory of Raymond John Kidney 1928 – 2010 Organist, Holy Trinity Church 1955 – 2010 “To God be the glory” ‘.

32. PULPIT

HymnBoardPlaque  Pulpit

The fine wooden pulpit stands directly across the crossing from the organ console. It was donated by the 1888 architect, E J Woods. Next to the pulpit hangs a board for hymn numbers. This bears a small plaque which reads: ‘In loving memory of Jane Anders, passed away 17th August 1956 aged 16 years Presented by her parents. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.’

33. PULPIT AND TABLET

Pulpit1  PulpitMemorial

Directly above the pulpit is another memorial tablet. This one reads: ‘In memory of Sarah the wife of William Bartley first Registrar of the Diocese, after a long and painful illness borne with Christian resignation she died as she had lived in the love of God and humble confidence in Christ her Saviour on the 15th day of June 1849 in the 45th year of her age. The memory of the just is blessed. Prov 10:7’

34. ARCH AND DECORATION

ArchText

Before we enter the sanctuary area, we stop to admire the separating Gothic arch with its painted message and decorations on either side. The arch carries the scriptural injunction, ‘O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness’ taken from Psalm 96:9. Many older churches had this text displayed before the congregation.

35. NORTH SANCTUARY

NESanctuary

Finally we come to the sanctuary ... . Here on the North side we have four more of the church’s many plaques, and the doorway through to the vestry. Ignoring the musicians’ equipment, we notice a brass plaque on the wooden panelling, and then the credence table.

36. MEMORIALS

Memorial1  Memorial2

Because Trinity is such an old church, many of the memorials have special historical significance. The memorial at left reads: ‘Sacred to the memory of the Reverend Charles Beaumont Howard M.A. First Colonial Chaplain of this Province, who died July 19th 1843, aged 36 years.’ The oval memorial at right reads: ‘Sacred to the memory of Grace Montgomery Farrell, who died 18th July 1870, aged 58. She married, first, the Revd Charles Beaumont Howard, Colonial Chaplain, and secondly the Revd James Farrell, Dean of Adelaide; both of whom were incumbents of this church. They all did much good in their day, and will be held in affectionate remembrance by members of Trinity Church.’

37. MORE MEMORIALS

Memorial5  Memorial6

The next memorials read (at left): ‘Sacred to the memory of the Very Reverend James Farrell M.A. first Dean of Adelaide, second and last Colonial Chaplain of the Province, and incumbent of this Church for twenty-six years, who died at Malvern, England, April 26th 1869, aged 66.’ The text at right reads: ‘In memory of Revd Richardson Reid, Curate of this Church from 1858 to 1869 Incumbent from 1870 to 1893. My times are in Thy Hand Psalm 31:15.’

38. PLAQUE AND CREDENCE TABLE

WallBrass  CredenceTable

On the wooden panelling of the East wall, just left of the credence table, is this brass plate. It reads: ‘To the glory of God. This panelling and communion rail is sacred to the memory of the Rev. Fredk. Webb Incumbent 1895 – 1925. Who died March 11th. 1925. and Emma Jane beloved wife of the above who Died at Sea September 26th. 1924. March 11th. 1926.’ The credence table is traditionally used for placing the elements of the Eucharist before they are blessed. On the table here stand an open Bible and a large brass plate, probably used to receive the church offerings.

39. SOUTH SANCTUARY

SESancctuary

Turning to the South side of the sanctuary we note a memorial and a brass plaque, a drum kit, a grand piano being put to good use, and an unexpected triplet of stained glass windows on the South wall.

40. MEMORIALS

Memorial7  BrassPlate

The memorial on the East wall reads: ‘Erected by Trinity parishioners in loving memory of Revd Edward Scarisbrick B.A. Cambridge, who was for a short time Assistant Minister of this Church, a faithful servant of his Master Entered into rest on Whit Sunday May 13th 1894, aged 31 years. “Be ye also ready.” ’ The brass plaque reads: ‘To the glory of God The lights in the chancel and transept of this church are sacred to the memory of Esq. Reginald Moffatt Fulford Rector Jan. 1924 to Nov. 1945 “Let your light so shine before men” March 1948 ’
