21. SOUTH TRANSEPT

STransept

We can now view the South transept with its fine ornate balcony and large window behind. In the foreground we see a Bible stand and the font. Under the balcony and out of view to the right is the exit door on this side. Visible on the facing wall are three small brass plaques, then a small and large plaque, and to the left a memorial tablet. A stained glass window is just visible on the end wall at left, a couple of plaques and an item yet to be discovered!    INDEX

22. FONT AND READING STAND

Font  BibleStand

FontPlaque

Standing out from the South transept are this unusual Bible reading stand and the marble baptismal font. The font plaque indicates that the font was donated by Elizabeth Rhodes in memory of her husband, William. In fact, some of the first Church benefactors were: • Francis Faulding who established Faulding pharmaceuticals and his brother in law • Thomas Waterhouse who had vast interests in copper mining and land development • George Harris, founder of the firm Harris Scarfe • Hon John Colton M.P., a prosperous Ironmonger • William and Thomas Rhodes, merchant brothers.

23. FOUR PLAQUES

STranseptPlaque4  STranseptPlaque1  STranseptPlaque2  STranseptPlaque1R

Let’s look at the four small brass plaques. The isolated plaque at left is in memory of Elizabeth S Chapple who died October 19th 1930. Next to this is a plaque for George Knowles who died 24th February 1909. To the right of this is a plaque for Sarah J. Knowles who died 23rd March 1931. The plaque at right remembers Winifred E. Knowles who worshipped and served the Lord in this Church from September 1884 until May 1970.

24. ON THE SOUTH TRANSEPT WALLS

The tablet is in memory of L. Llewellin Davey, 1889 – 1991, Church Trustee, and his wife Doris Allott Davey 1868 – 1985 who sang in the choir. The brass plaque is in memory of Frederick Chapple, 1876 – 1924, who was Headmaster of Prince Alfred College. On the adjacent wall hangs an award of Commander of the British Empire to Margaret Lurline Davey, listed in the 1981 Queen’s Honours. Below is a small plaque in memory of the life of Margaret Lurline Davey CBE 1915 – 2010..

25. SOUTH TRANSEPT EAST WINDOW

STranseptEWindow  STranseptEWindowClose  WindowPlaque

The small end window of the Southern transept shows King Josiah reading the law. (2 Kings 23:1–3) ‘And you Jerusalem, where God like a shepherd watches over His people, will once again be the capital of the Kingdom that was yours.’ (Micah 4 : 8) ‘No, the Lord has told us what is good. What He requires of us is this; to do what is just, to show constant love and to live in humble fellowship with our God’. The window is given in memory of Sarah Davey who lived from 1863 to 1941.

26. SOUTH TRANSEPT WINDOW

STranseptWindowLightSTranseptWindow1STranseptWindowArmour

The South transept Window was given by the Church Fellowship at Kent Town at the same time as the Gartrell family inserted the windows opposite in the North transept. The left panel shows ‘Christ at the Door’ (Revelation 3:20) ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.’ The right panel depicts a warrior in armour. (Ephesians 6: 10 – 20) ‘Put on the whole armour of God.’

27. TRANSEPT BALCONY

STranseptBalcony

The balustrades of the transept galleries are very attractive. Originally there was another central gallery above the pulpit, linking the north and south transept galleries and accommodating the choir and organ. This was removed late in the nineteenth century when a larger organ was installed and the pulpit repositioned in front of the organ pipes, with the choir stalls placed in front of the pulpit.

28. CROSSING ROOF

CrossingRoof

From long experience in looking at cathedrals, I know not to miss the opportunity of standing in the middle of the crossing and looking up!

29. COMMUNION TABLE

CommunionTable

The communion table has a central place both in the Church and in its worship. It is here that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is remembered, and the communion elements of bread and wine distributed. The taking of the elements by members of the congregation symbolizes a spiritual union between Christ and the believer.

30. PULPIT AND VIEW

Pulpit

PulpitView

The pulpit stands in a raised position behind the communion table and in front of the organ pipes. It is from here the preacher proclaims the Word of the Lord ... hopefully to a larger congregation!

31. ORGAN

OrganPipes  OrganDecoration

OrganConsole

This organ was built in South Australia and installed in 1898 by J E Dodd and Sons. In 1964 a rebuild was carried out by the Gunstar Organ Works, successor to J E Dodd and Sons. The organ is one of the best examples of ‘high quality organ building’ achieved in this state over a century ago. In 2010 – 2012 the organ was extensively upgraded with new pipes and a third keyboard making it an instrument of more than 3000 pipes ranging in size from the length of a little finger to many metres in length. The rebuild was done by Richard Larritt Organ Builder at a cost of over $200,000 and the donations of over 1000 pipes. There are some nice decorative touches.

32. LOWER NORTH TRANSEPT

NTranseptUnderBalcony

We now turn to the North transept, with a view below the balcony. At right a single stained glass window, then around the walls, a brass plaque, a roll of names, and at left another plaque. In the space there is a table and chairs with an ornamental cross on the table. The exit door from this transept is in the short wall out of view at left, opposite the stained glass window.

33. NORTH TRANSEPT EAST WINDOW

NTranseptWindow  NTranseptWindowDetail  NTranseptWindowDetail2

The end window below the balcony shows a Crusader and an Angel. The theme is taken from one of Tennyson’s works: Follow the Christ the King. The extended verse is ‘Follow the Christ the King. Live pure, Speak true, Right wrong, Follow the King’. The window was erected to the memory of William Reynolds Bayly the fourth,Headmaster of Prince Alfred College. He died on the 9th November 1937, aged 70.

34. NORTH TRANSEPT ITEMS

NTranseptOrganists  TableCross

  NTranspetPlaque2  Plaque3

The plaque at left commemorates the life of Rev. Isaac Rooney FRCS who died aged 88. He was a Methodist minister from 1864 to 1931, and for 25 years a pioneer missionary to Fiji and New Britain. The Honour Roll lists the names of Kent Town organists and choir masters from 1873 onwards. The larger brass plaque tells of the Rededication of the pipe organ in June 2012. Finally we notice the interesting cross on the table – a decorated cross in Celtic style, with the letters IHS engraved at the centre. These letters are the first three letters of the name ‘Jesus’ in Latinized Greek.

35. NORTH TRANSEPT WINDOW

NTranseptWindowLeft  NTranseptWindow1  NTranseptWindowRight

There are two picture panels in this window. The one at right shows Christ as the good Shepherd. In John 10:11 Jesus says: ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.’ The panel at left depicts Christ in the Garden as described in Luke 22: 39 – 46. The window was given by James and Sarah Gartrell of Fernilee Lodge.

36. NORTH WALL

NNaveWall

We continue our exploration of Wesley Kent Town Church by investigating the nave North wall. We first observe that there is an extra stained glass window on this side – four instead of three. As before, the windows are separated by various boards and memorial tablets.

37. PLAQUES AND TABLETS

  Plaque4

Adjacent to the North transept are two memorial tablets and three plaques. The tablet at left is in memory of Thomas Greaves Waterhouse who died at Leamington, England on October 6th 1885 in his 75th year. The right tablet is for Mary Adela McCulloch Knight, daughter of Rev S. Knight, who pastored this Church for five years. There is also a plaque for John Frederick Ward, Headmaster of Prince Alfred College 1930 – 1948 and a Trustee of this Church, and a plaque for John Angus Dunning, another Headmaster of Prince Alfred College 1949 –1969. The end window was erected in memory of James and Sarah Gartrell.
