There was an obvious need for underground storage of the various munitions used, and it is possible to see what this was like. Particular attention was paid to the lighting used underground, as a stray spark could have devastating consequences.

The sign reads:

Underground Magazine

Constructed in 1879–80 this
magazine forms part of the
1880 upper battery. Ammunition
was hoisted from the magazine
through the four lift doors in the roof.
