This old J1234 locomotive in New Zealand well represents the glorious age of steam. It was around 1765 when Scottish inventor James Watt began work on the first steam engine: a stationary cylinder with a piston producing a linear up and down (or left and right) motion. The mathematical challenge was then to convert this into circular motion which would propel a locomotive. Thus began the study of linkages.
