94. WEATHER

Everyone is interested in the weather! It is a prime topic of conversation. It is also a good source of mathematical starters. For example, air pressure is measured by a barometer. How does a barometer work? What units are used to measure pressure? What sort of weather corresponds to low pressure? high pressure?

Again, temperature may be measured in degrees Fahrenheit or in degrees Centigrade. How are these two scales related? Can you convert from one given measurement to its equivalent? For what temperature are the measurements the same?

Can you read a weather map? What are the isobars? Why do winds follow the isobars instead of cutting across them? In what direction do the winds travel around a ‘L’? Is this the same in both hemispheres?

Read about why weather forecasting can be so difficult.
