95. TYPE SETTING

The march of technology has had an incredible impact on the publishing industry, yet the old ways still hold a certain fascination. The old scale of 72 points to the inch is found on today’s computer screens, as is the sized ‘leading’ between lines – both inherited from the hand setting of pieces of lead type. There is scope here for exercises in scaling, ratio and proportion. Then again the common paper sizes A3, A4, A5 ... all involve the ratio 1 : 2. Why is this so?
