We have already looked at the idea of perspective in painting with a drawing by William Hogarth (Photo #15). In Leonardo Da Vincis masterpiece The Last Supper such perspective is easily seen with the diagonals of the rectangle frame and the lines of the ceiling meeting in the face of Jesus. There is however a great deal of further geometric structure in this fresco. Try printing out a copy of the painting, and then subdivide the frame with a horizontal central line, andthree equally spaced vertical lines. Draw the diagonals of these new rectangles, and try adding further lines joining various intersections. How do your lines relate to the features of the painting?
