Giant Rata and Caves

GIANT RATA AND CAVES

In the afternoon I walk a short but very steep stretch of the Ngamoko Track to see the giant rata tree – one of the largest in NZ – some 40 feet around the base and a thousand years old.

It started as an epiphyte perched up in a giant rimu, sent down roots, and finally the rimu died and rotted away.

Then back on the road towards Wairoa to photograph an amazing rock leaning precariously high above the road.

Finally, about 10 km from the camp, I trek half of the Oneputu Caves track – quite fascinating. The Lake was formed 2200 years ago by two giant landslides, and the rock formations along this track are the result of this event.

It is a bush track interspersed with great caves,

sculpted cliffs,

and views out over the lake from the top of sheer rock precipices! Part way along I find a steep steel ladder back to the road, and return to the car. I had hoped to investigate the lower end of the track, but the road was blocked by an accident: a lady driver being taken off in an ambulance. Returning home we stop to admire the lake views and some striking rock formations.

Then a cuppa and an ice cream, tea, and general exhaustion! It has been a great day. We have been impressed by the attitude of several Maoris around here: friendly and helpful.
