[William Neighbour] the deceased, who arrived in SA in the ship Baboo in 1846, [1848] was born at Bushey, Hertfordshire on August 21 1823. Prior to leaving England he was employed by the Marquis of Abercorn for several years. Two days after he landed at Port Adelaide he was engaged by the late Mr Henry Semmens, for many years landlord of the Fountain Inn, Encounter Bay. The journey from Adelaide to the southern seaport was made by Mr and Mrs Neighbour in a bullock dray, and after their arrival at their destination they experienced their full share of the hardships incidental to early settlement. In 1851 Mr Neighbour visited the Daisy Hill goldfield, but remained only for a few months. He was subsequently employed in connection with the construction of the Victor Harbour [sic] jetty and the bridges which soan the Hindmarsh and Inman rivers. About 18 years ago Mr Neighbour was appointed librarian of the Victor Harbour Institute, and retained the office until the time of his death. Last year he visited Adelaide for the first time for more than 40 years, and found it difficult to believe that it was the city he had known in the early days. [Sands and McDougall; 1901 report] [Also Settlers around the Bay – Laube, A.]
[Newspaper clipping 11/9/1929]: [Emma Jane Fielding's] father was Mr William Neighbour, who settled in Encounter Bay in the early forties of last century.
