Summary from unknown early history book: Richard George, born in 1855, ... at the early age of 10 was employed on a farm, receiving only his keep. Later he joined his uncle, William Polkinghorne in road contracting, and then with his grandfather ... in building contracts. He then worked in farming for early pioneer Mr Smith (–> Smithfield) before becoming an apprentice stone mason. Joined a builder at Moonta. Then started at jamestown as a building contractor, where he met Hannah Gentry. They had 11 children. RG studied architecture and carried out important work in SA, Victoria and WA including remodelling Fremantle Town Hall. He received many expressions of eulogy for his work(!). Retired in 1929 and was made a life member of the Masonic Lodge.
