Misc. Notes
In 1854 David and his sisters Mary and Jean obtained assisted migration to South Australia. They sailed from Liverpool to Port Adelaide on the Joseph Rowan, arriving on the 18th June 1854, after a three months voyage. They all gave their occupations as farm servants, a term generally used for workers on big estates. Each brought with them a large wooden box with their name stamped on it on a metal plate, which contained virtually all their worldly goods. David Milne's box is still in the possession of the family. In 1858 David married Ellen O'Shaughnessy. At this time he was working as a shepherd for A. B. Murray and his brother John at Mt Crawford. By 1861 when their second child Ellen was born, they had moved to North Rhine where they worked as farm labourers. When their third child David Melville was born on 13 Nov 1862, the family had already settled at Coghills Creek. Late in 1861, David joined James MILNE at Coghills Creek in some sort of private share farming arrangement. The brothers worked together well. At Coghills Creek two more children were born to David and Ellen: Mary Jane in 1864 and Christina in 1866. Elizabeth and Mary Jane died of diphtheria in May 1865 and were buried in the little cemetery. David died of typhoid fever on 6 Apr 1867. [Four Milnes of Forfar : Jack Cross]
