Misc. Notes
In 1854 Mary, her brother David and her sister Jean obtained assisted migration to South Australia. They sailed from Liverpool to Port Adelaide on the Joseph Rowan, arriving on the 18th June 1854, after a three months voyage. They all gave their occupations as farm servants, a term generally used for workers on big estates. Each brought with them a large wooden box with their name stamped on it on a metal plate, which contained virtually all their worldly goods. On the voyage out, Mary befriended Melville HODGE, and they were married in his hut on 28 Mar 1857. Mary was clearly living with Melville before they were married, possibly as a housekeeper. A year after Melville's death, Mary married miner John MOYLE, but that same year, John died or disappeared. Her brother James who was the leader and patriarch of the family, then took her and her two children to Coghills Creek where he could support her. Mary married James COUZENS in 1865, and adopted Laura HODGE. In 1907 Mary retired to north Laura where she died of a stroke in 1910. Mary was in many ways unorthodox, and many of her descendents showed the same tendency to defy convention. [Four Milnes of Forfar : Jack Cross]
