Drew grew up in a happy family in St Peters. He loved sport and exclled at lacrosse, becoming a member of the Australian team for three years in a row. He took an apprenticeship in the SA Gas Company, and climbed the ladder to become foreman, plant engineer, personnel manager, and finally general manager. For each rise he undertook a correspondence course, studying hard to equip himself for the position. He was honest, genuine, hard-working, and admired by his workmates as a worker who had 'made good'. He was a good father who enjoyed his family, and in his spare time Drew made toys and furniture which had a reputatation for being unbreakable. After his marriage to Joan, the couple were almost penniless, and rented several houses before designing and building their own place in Magill. Around 1989, after the children had finished school and left home to flat with their friends, Drew and Joan moved up to a rather grander home in Aldgate, where they lived until Drew's death.
