Misc. Notes
Harold was born in Taradale. As a boy he was interested in photography, music and radio, making his own sets. In his teens he had rheumatic fever. He went to NApier Technical College and then took a plumbing apprenticeship with Henry Williams and Sons. While living at the Avenue Rd house, Harold moved into the tent which Mortimer had occupied, the structure having been made rather more permanent. After the earthquake Harold found himself without work, and he turned his hand to watch and clock repairing, firstly at home and then in rooms at Taradale. A newspaper cutting at the time of his death reads:
"DAVIS, Harold William (Watchmaker). Five years I spent at your side, whilst you taught me an apprenticeship. Esteemed friend, poet, philosopher, scholar, teacher of the mysteries, how I came to love you. The end is the beginning. Ray Francis Gilbert."
In the mid-thirties Harold tried his hand unsuccessfully at gold prospecting at Thames before sailing to Fiji in 1939 to work for a jeweller who also ran a souvenir shop in Suva. There he passed exams which gave him the sole Pacific agency for Omega watch repairs. He alsi became a member of the International Horological Institute. He joined the Volunteer Fire Brigade and played in the band, adding the accordion to his list of instruments. Harold married Hilda Martha BILLING on 14/8/1954 in Suva, Fiji. Hilda was a pretty girl, part Indian and part Portugese. They had two sons while still in Fiji, Ken and Lloyd. In 1960 Harold brought his family back to NZ and settled in Whangarei. Beverly was born there. He worked in Clarke's Jewellers and became curator of the Whangarei Clock Museum. He suffered ill health in later life, died in 1981 and was cremated.
