Grace was the eldest child of Herbert and Ada. She was christened and confirmed at All Saints Church in Taradale. As a child she loved school. At the end of her chooling she became a pupil teacher (teacher assistant) at Taradale Primary School. She travelled to Napier to do extra study at Sacred Heart College and there learnt French. She was also accomplished at drawing freehand a map of the world! She married William Barker DAVIS on 15th August 1908, and spent their honeymoon in Wellington. They returned to rent a new home in Church Road, Taradale, but soon moved to a larger property across the road with a cheaper rental. Grace was a practical, positive person, who knitted non-stop! She was family minded, although they lived a fairly stringent life-style. Soon after her marriage Emma ordered three Frister and Rossman sewing machines, one for herself, one for Grace and one for Sibyl. Grace's remained in constant use for 58 years. Grace struggled with here health, and had a goitre removed in 1941. After Will died in 1971, Grace stayed on in the old house, until she died in hospital in 1974.
Grace was very fond of smelling salts and always had a bottle. She hated the telephone – it was there only for necessity. She disliked being left alone, especially near the end, and for this reason May gave up several jobs to stay at home with her. [Thelma SCOTT, May DAVIS, Cherry SWAYN]
