Misc. Notes
Emma attended a boarding school at Wolverhampton, England, and then took up teaching. She and her mother arrived in Auckland, NZ, in 1871 on the sailing ship 'Queen Bee', and Emma taught in a Mrs Lewis's Private Boarding School in Epsom. Her marriage to Charles in 1876 was at Ormond, a settlement northwest of Gisborne where she was teaching at a private school held at the residence of Mrs W. King. Charles and Emma were staunch Anglicans and Emma was a founding member of the Taradale Mothers' Union. She was expecially interested in missionary work and encouraged her eldest daughter Florence to be a missionary. Emma had a dominating personality in the home, and was a snob. She thought that the Davises were better than the Scotts. Other family members fared no better! She imposed her will on various members of the family right up until her death. Emma had very strict idea of Sunday observance with no cards or knitting allowed. She wouldn't allow her children to have butter and jam on the same slice of bread. On one occasion she stayed in bed for two days while hes stays (corsets) dried; to dress without them was unthinkable. As an old lady she alwsy dressed in black and toward the end was confined firstly to a chair and then to her bed. She appeared not to be happy. None of the family remember even one occasion when she smiled, let alone laughed. One might ask what turned the original elegant attractive young lady into the severe older woman.
