Misc. Notes
Ethel had a much quieter disposition than her ister Flo, although they both tended to be a bit snobbish. They liked to think they were acquainted with 'the right people', and enjoyed dropping names. Ethel stayed at home after she left school, but did teach elementary piano. She was to become, albeit willingly, a prop for ger relations, acting as a surrogate mother on many occasions. For example, when Charlie's second wife Margaret tragically died, Ethel looked after their two daughters Madeleine (8) and Denise (4), playing a large part in their upbringing. Ethel was brought up in an age when modesty was paramount, and in the presence of faily children would get fully dressed under her voluminous nightgown. Alcoholic liquor was never allowed in Emma's house, and on occasion when Charles was given bottles of beer, they were quickly seized by Flo and Ethel and the contents poured down the sink. Ethel developed mild diabetes later in life and she died at the age of 91.
