Misc. Notes
Charlie served overseas in the Army in World War I. After his return his fiancee broke off their engagement. He showed no sign of settling down; in Grace's words: 'Charlie didn't like work.' He considered himself something of a ladies' man, and he did have a certain amount of charm. 'A man about town.' He was an ardent follower of the horses and seemed to be constantly short of money. He married Winifred DOLBEL, the Dolbels being local landowners. There was one son, Bruce from this marriage. However the marriage didn't last, although the divorce only came after mother Emma's death as divorce was anathema to her beliefs! His second marriage was to a widow, Margaret, with children and they had two duaghters, Madeline and Denise. They lived in Feilding. His wife died in childbirth along with their third child. This was especially tragic, as Charlie was probably the happiest he had been at this time. Fairly late in life he met another widow at a school reunion, and she went to Feilding and married him. Six months later they were parted and divorced. Charlie became ill while he was visiting Ethel in hospital and died shortly after He was 83 and is buried in Feilding. Like his father he was a keen and successful competitor with his dogs.
