Misc. Notes
Ada married her cousin in England. She lived at 43 Camden Square, Camden Town in 1883. She and Herbert emigrated to NZ in the early years of this program, and were among the first English pioneers. They were granted a special pension by the Govt in later years because of this. About 2 years after their marriage, Herbert and Ada came to the house in Main Rd, Greenmeadows. Their family was born here. They shifted to a house in Osier Rd about 1919. Ada lived with the DAVIS family for about 11 years before her death. Ada invented a patent ointment - a salve containing rosemary for cuts and bruises; her son Lewis sold this from door to door in Palmerston in 1920. Ada used chlorodene as a universal cure, and finally became addicted to it, and had to go to hospital. After this she took up blackballs instead. She was a loving, kindly and generous person who loved flowers. She loved and spoiled her grandchildren. She ran a small poultry farm with an incubator to rise chickens. Emma made her own handkies from fine handkerchief linen, hemming them all by hand. She was a great worrier. When May visited she hoped that Ada would be humming a tune in the morning; it meant that she wasn't dead yet! She bought a pair of new shoes, and then worried that she wouldn't live long enough to get the wear out of them. After Herbert died, Ada got into bed and was prepared to stay there! She often talked about dying. In 1926 she writes of suffering from fits of nervous trembling in times of stress. After Herbert's death she lived with various of the children. She was a smoker and rolled her own. As she got old she bacem deaf and used an ear trumpet. She spent quite abit of time in bed, not always of necessity. Always a small person, she semed to get smaller as the years went by. She died in 1948 of carcinoma of the stomach and senility. Sources: May DAVIS, Cherry SWAYN. Death: certificate.
