Misc. Notes
Birth, Death, Marriage: May DAVIS. Lewis was a painter and paper-hanger. He liked to play the accordian. He was looking around for someone to marry, so Granny (Ada Emma) SCOTT suggested Fanny PRICE, a school teacher boarding with her (under the tree!). Before and after his marriage Lewis had a big store at Maharahara, near Dannevirke. They lived next to the Maharahara school. William and Grace DAVIS joined him at Maharahara near Dannevirke for the second half of 1920. Grace was in charge of the PO, and her husband William delivered the groceries. William B. DAVIS reported that Lewis ate 'the most peculiar food'. It turned out to be muesli, describe by WB as 'raw porridge'! Lewis was a diet crank: he tried living on grass at one time! About 1920, Lewis went door to door in Palmerston selling Granny SCOTT's patent ointment, and red letter Bibles. Lewis and Fanny were notoriously late. They regularly took Granny SCOTT to the cinema, and inevitably missed the beginning of the film. One holiday, they had cancelled the milk before leaving, and then had to rush around to get some, as they left a day late1 They had a happy marriage, and came back to live at 24 Osier Rd iafter Herbert died. Some time after 1941 the family moved to Pye's Pa, Tauranga where they had a citrus orchard and remained there. Lewis died of stomach cancer 17/10/1953 in Tauranga. [May DAVIS, Thelma SCOTT]
