Misc. Notes
Birth, Death, Marriage: May DAVIS. (Rupert) Mortimer SCOTT (b. 11/7/1898 [?]) was a 'loner'. He called himself 'Horace'. He owned a motorbike, and lived at home for years, where he kept a pet swan called Monty. His favourite light reading was the weekly magazine 'Humour', which perhaps reveals his cheerful nature, not unlike his father. He enjoyed a good laugh. At some stage he went to Christchurch, and while there had a cartilege operation on his knee. He came back to Hawkes Bay by 1931. He lived in a tent with a wooden floor out the back of the DAVIS home in Avenue Rd soon after the family moved there, from where he carried out his plumbing. He never talked about his affairs, and as a young man never had a romance. He served an apprenticeship as a plumber, and owned a Model T truck, in which everything hung together with wire! Around 1939-40, Mortimer was living in Napier, began courting Florence SCOTT. When the Bert SCOTT family moved to Auckland, he came and boarded with Thelma. and married Flo from there. They had a small wedding breakfast at the Avondale house, with Aunts Ada and Alice attending. They moved to a flat in Sackville St, Auckland, and then bought a house in Richmond Rd. Flo had previously had to struggle for her existence; now Mortimer waited on her hand and foot. Mortimer was active in the Methodist church. Although he was secretive in his personality, he was very nice and a lot of fun. At the end, Mortimer had been off work ill, but went back on light duties. He went up to repair a roof, fell through, landed on his head and died in Auckland 9/6/1970. [Thelma SCOTT]
