When Else left school at the end of 1930 she went to work at Badley's store in Greenmeadows Village. However, she found herself jobless with the deepening of the Depression, and took to selling Lifebuoy soap with May from door to door in Napier. In 1934 Else took a position as a live-in house-keeper for a Miss Williams on Napier Hill. She later took a job as grocery assistant in the store at Whakatu (between Napier and Hastings) where she lived-in during the week. She met Ron SHAKESPEARE here, as Ron worked in the office of the Whakatu Freezing Works. Else and Ron were married in the Napier Anglican Cathedral at Easter 1940. Joy was matron of honour, and Cherry bridesmaid.
She died at home of cancer in 1983. She had suffered from cancer for three years. She was cremated.
